ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF MEMBERS

 

WHAT WE DID WHERE WE WERE

 

*Bob & Myrna Logan volunteered 765 hours at Samish Island Campground, Bow, WA., over the last four months.  They mowed grass, cleaned up

around the camp, made repairs, put on new mattress covers, received & put away groceries, washed, dried, folded & put away kitchen laundry, etc.

 

*Charlie Holmes of Topeka, KS, worked 21 hours at the Topeka church July 27 – August 8.  He replaced light fixtures in the kitchen & fellowship hall, replaced light bulbs in the fellowship hall and basement stairwell, replaced batteries in Alarm system, broke out concrete sidewalk at east door to sanctuary, set forms, poured concrete for new sidewalk, sealed old & new sidewalks, set posts & bottom rail for fence around trash bins, & removed forms from new sidewalk.

 

*During August & September, Kevin & Ruth Olmstead volunteered 68 hours at Camp Manitou, cutting down trees around the Caretaker’s House, and helping put siding on the same house.   At the River Trails Girl Scout Camp, in Sheriden, IL, they cleared brush with a brush hog in many areas of the camp, and built 16 bat houses.

 

*There’s something for each of us to do, wherever we are!  Let us know what you’ve been doing!  We’ll add your hours to those of the RVA.  So far, in 2009, RVA members have volunteered 10,607 hrs.

 

 

*As Carlyle and Ann Mitchell headed home to Ontario after spending the winter in south Texas, they stopped off at Camp Sionito at Bandera, Texas from March 18 – 31.  Carlyle volunteered 76 hours.  Cabin 9: installed mirror; Cabin 12: replaced door; Cabin 21: painted shelving, repaired water tanks; Cabin 40: painted interior; RV Clubhouse: repaired ceiling; Kitchen: installed a sink for mop, and plumbing for drainage; Shop: repaired lawn mowers, changing oil, as needed, and checked blades; started the generator; checked edger; Storage Shed: repaired two doors; Misc: leveled piles of mulch; discarded multiple rocks around property; painted 3 picnic tables. Ann volunteered 40 hours. Cabins 1-4: sewed drapes; laundered, folded, replaced & organized blankets; Kitchen: organized linens, bought new & laundered; organized kitchen tools & pots & pans; swept & mopped kitchen floor; and helped with many meals for Leadership and Men’s retreats.

 

*During the winter, Cecil Alford volunteered 160 hours at Camp Sionito: Walk-in freezer & cooler: cleaned out & painted; RV Clubhouse: repaired door; Shop: cleaned area behind building; Cabin # 40: installed water line; Kitchen: installed sink & drainage behind kitchen for cleaning mops; Pool: emptied & acid cleaned swimming pool, and ran new water line to the pool. Misc: spread wood chips & hauled off scrap iron.

 

*Don & Mary Mitchell volunteered at Camp Sionito from March 14 – 28 on their way home to Ontario from Texas.  Don worked 95 hours: Nurse’s cabin: dug ditches, landscaped behind building; Children’s centre: raised service wire; Dining Hall: cleaned up trash behind building;  organized electrical/plumbing supplies; Lodge Room #5: repaired toilet; Pool bathrooms: worked on water lines; Dish Washing Room: installed two new faucets; repaired dishwasher; Kitchen: sharpened kitchen knives, installed drain pipe & big mop sink outside of kitchen; Shop: repaired cultivator, vise, & 4 lawnmowers, sharpened chisels, worked on golf cart & big tractor, cleaned up around front & side of building, organized electrical/plumbing area; RV

 

club house: improved plumbing; Cabin 5: installed mirror & coat hanger, repaired toilet; Cabin 10: repaired door; Cabins 19 & 35: cleaned cabins, laundered bedding; Laundry Room: cleaned; Misc: leveled gravel on roads, repaired “spider web” climbing apparatus on gym set, repaired basketball hoop; raised 2 sheds & repaired 4 doors; moved 3 trailers to other locations.. Mary volunteered 59 hours: Cleaning: ice machine room, shed & shop office; Lodge: cleaned rooms; Cabins  1 – 16: swept cabins & stocked w/supplies; Cabins 19 & 21: washed laundry; Cabins 17 & 19 – 22: swept cabins, Cabins 1-4 sewed curtains; Kitchen & serving area: swept & washed area floor, cleaned restroom; helped with meals & clean-up during retreats.  Shop: cleaned paint area; swept floors.

 

*During March, RVA friends volunteered 39 hours at Camp Sionito on several tasks: Cabin #40: dug trench & installed water line,  Playground: repaired equipment, Shop: repaired lawn mower hitch, organized shop;  Kitchen: painted deep freeze;  helped with meal preparation, serving & clean-up for Retreat, cleaned dining hall, ironed curtains & typed Lodge & Dining Hall rules for display.

 

*In late May & mid-June, Kevin & Ruth Olmstead volunteered 143 hours at Camp Manitou, Cassopolis, Michigan.  They cut suckers & brush from around trees, & stumps in main camping area; cut back small trees, brush & overhanging limbs at the beach front; removed brush & dead trees around camp; assembled bunk beds for new Lodge; dismantled groups of three chairs to prepare them for painting; sold camp shirts during the Open House for the new lodge; hung shower curtains; repaired camp tractor & shopped for a new one; repaired & painted chairs for screened porch.

 

*Tom Banks and six friends volunteered 139 hours at Blue Water Campground, Lexington, MI from May 18 – 24.  They repaired and reconditioned two sleeping cabins with new siding, windows & doors, some electrical work and built new doors for nine other cabins. 

*Bob & Myrna Logan have been working at Samish Island Campground at Bow, WA.  During June, they volunteered 342 hours.  Bob has been putting in some long days, and loving it, with mowing grass, trimming berry vines, edging, watering, fertilizing, cleaning RV park stanchions, servicing mowers,

filling in ruts, moving equipment, sorting camp logs, and helping with the ongoing 50th celebration, helping receive grocery orders and putting away, cooking when needed.  Myra is still recuperating, following surgery, but looks forward to doing better next year.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF MEMBERS

 

January – February, at Deerhaven Campground, Paisley, FL., 7 members & 3 friends worked 715 hours on a variety of tasks.   They remodeled the conference room, installing sheetrock, cabinets, lighting & phone; removed old satellite dish from recreation room; replaced fan in  kitchen window & lubricated exhaust fan; installed 2 ceiling fans in dining hall & removed old pool table to make room for a new one; moved shed, built partition wall, installed hurricane anchors & a new door; cleaned out & organized shop; miscellaneous – cleaned all rooms in residence centers & meeting rooms, installed 2 wireless transmitters, built rack to store plywood, designed & made key rack to hold 70 keys for RC buildings & cabins, made numbered key tags for each one; painted 10 picnic tables; cut down trees & picked up sticks & branches; spread wood chips on road; performed various plumbing & repair jobs. On January 30th, construction was begun on a shed for a lawnmower at the McAllen, Texas Community of Christ Church.  Four RVA members and several  from  Michigan, Texas  and Ontario, Canada, worked 312 hours. They dug out the grass along the edge of the parking lot, leveled the area, laid forms for a sidewalk & a shed pad; poured concrete, placed 4 X 4 edging along the sidewalk to prevent dirt & grass from washing onto the sidewalk; framed the shed and briced the walls.  After roofing the building, the men built a door to fit the opening.   The ladies prepared lunch each  day  and helped with various jobs.  A job well done!

Floyd Wheat, his son, Mark, and two local members worked 120 hours at Camp Farwesta during the fall.  They enlarged the public address room in the Tabernacle, more than doubling the size of the room by installing a new floor, a new counter to work on, new steps to walk up to reach the room, an air conditioner, and more electrical circuits.
